Submissions

* The fiction we like is deeply varied, from the succinct prose of Ernest Hemingway to the fresh wackiness of Aimee Bender, from the ethereality of Italo Calvino to the ruminations of Alice Munro. We enjoy poetry that is conscious of itself as language and does not rely on end-rhyme or formal structures – Mark Strand, Brenda Hillman, and Mary Jo Bang are some of the many poets we adore. In non-fiction, we dig Annie Dillard’s depth, David Sedaris’s humor, and Anthony Bourdain’s brusqueness. In other words, we’re open to any and many styles – what matters most is that your work is good, thoughtful, complex.

*We accept submissions year-round unless otherwise noted on the home page. While length is open, we rarely publish prose pieces over 5000 words. If submitting poetry, feel free to submit up to three poems.

* Simultaneous submissions are accepted, but you must notify us immediately if the piece has been accepted elsewhere. We do not accept previously published pieces.

* We’re working on getting the fantastic online submissions manager, but in the meantime, Email submissions are accepted as .doc or .rtf attachments. Be sure to include the name of the piece and the genre (fiction, poetry, non-fiction) in the subject line and email the submissions to
